OGF24, 15-19 September 2008, Singapore
After a series of successful events in the US and Europe, OGF returned to Asia-Pacific for OGF24 set in beautiful Singapore, 15-19 September 2008. Co-located with the GridAsia 2008 event and hosted by Singapore Grid Forum, OGF24 offered a prime opportunity for distributed computing experts, developers, and users to meet with OGF’s global community and discuss emerging trends, success stories of grid deployments, and standards.
In addition to high-profile keynote speakers, participants benefited from a wide variety of programme content ranging from hot technologies like cloud computing and virtualisation as well as practical uses of grids in scientific and industrial settings. Participants were able to learn about products and services and see demonstrations of successful projects that have leveraged OGF technologies and standards.
OGF-Europe supported the OGF GIN Chartered Working Group Session and an EU & Asia-Pacific Workshop.
EU & Asia-Pacific Grid Collaborations & Future Challenges Workshop, 16 September 2008 during OGF24
OGF-Europe and the European Grid Initiative Design Study (EGI_DS) supported a workshop focusing on Europe's partnerships with Asia-Pacific in the arena of applied distributed computing with current and future perspectives firmly in mind.
The workshop showcased successful EU and Asia-Pacific partnerships focused on distributed computing. Kyriakos Baxevanidis, Acting Head of Unit GÉANT & eInfrastructures, delivered an introductory talk on the EC's strategies for shaping the EU Work Programme for 2010-2011. Jon Lau, Assistant Director of the National Grid Office Singapore presented national strategies on supporting distributed computing initiatives and future activities. Experts from both regions offered perspectives on current developments, including commercial initiatives, and explored future opportunities. European projects in attendance offered insight including: EGI_DS; OGF-Europe; EUIndiaGrid; EUAsiaGrid; EC-GIN; OMII-UK/OMII-Europe. These talks were complemented by a focus on GARUDA (India) and GridBus (Australia), as well as from ERNET (India) and Academia Sinica (Taiwan).
