Software Development for Distributed Computing
Purpose
The rise of virtualized and distributed infrastructures including distributed computing, and the emergence of multi-core processing capabilities have led to a new challenge to orchestrate the effective use of compute resources through the design or distributed applications. This skill was once considered the preserve of high performance, parallel, computing, but the new high throughput computing infrastructures offer substantial capacity to support user needs for scalability and agility in providing dynamic capacity. The challenge is that we are attempting the deployment of existing, monolithic applications in a distributed environment. As these applications are replaced with service oriented applications, what are the key steps to be taken in architecture and design to maximise the usefulness of the infrastructures? What can we learn from industry leaders in the design or distributed applications? What are the implications for standards? What lessons can we learn from past experience?
Who should attend?
There are several key academic and industrial organisations with relevant experience. Industrial organisations who have built largescale infrastructures and applications. What is the underpinning science here? How can we extract these principles and educate the wider audience? This issue is one of great interest to all prospective service providers and consumers including Software Vendors, Software Developers, Application Service Providers and all sizes of organisations.
Expected Outcomes
Create an unique contribution to the European community in a key area looking forwards. Stamp the OGF-EU brand on this challenge and ways forward.
