The Cloudscape workshop drew over 100 participants from Europe and the US to discuss the benefits of the adoption of Cloud Computing for business and the challenges that this may bring.
Challenges
Open Standards - Market and end-users are the forefront of the Cloud computing market and indeed it is "users that may drive interoperability standards among cloud service providers" - Martin Antony Walker, Independent consultant
Interoperability - There are two categories of interoperability that need to be addressed: interoperability between clouds and the interoperability between grids and clouds - Francesco Giacomini, INFN
Scalability - Issues surrounding how industry can move existing software packages from the internal centre into a cloud industry need to be addressed.
Management, Policies & legal issues – Quantifying costs & potential benefits of cloud computing will be a challenge although it was argued that data centre management could be one of the highest costs.
The Advantages of clouds encompass massive scalability bringing flexible storage requirements and reliability, as well as potential for further developments. Services accessible via a cloud may be run on grids and, in the case of infrastructure clouds, grids could be the hosted services. Furthermore, Cloud may offer temporary or partial outsourcing of infrastructure and services with Grids being embedded into clouds.
